About Us

Dedicated to Excellence in Education

Hendry Park Elementary School is located in the city of Angola, Indiana. Hendry Park is a kindergarten through fifth grade school, with a student population of approximately 400 students. The original building was constructed in 1954. There have been at least three major remodeling and construction projects since then, with the most recent one completed in August of 2001. Hendry Park is one of four elementary schools in the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County.  Our vision for Hendry Park is...
"Hendry Park Elementary School is dedicated to inspiring exemplary achievement and personal responsibility in every student."

90% of third graders will pass the 2013 I READ-3 assessment.  In 2012, 84.6% of third graders passed.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Hendry Park is in its second year of "school improvement" for not having made Adequate Yearly Progress as required by "No Child Left Behind."  Students who are receiving free or reduced lunches and did not pass the ISTEP+ or a struggling academically are eligible for our after school program, Full Speed Ahead and for Supplemental Educational Services (after school tutoring).   Based on improving scores on the ISTEP+ over the last few years, Hendry Park would be considered an "Exemplary Progress" school by P.L. 221's rating system.  However, because we did not make AYP, the "Exemplary Progress" designation has been reduced to the "Academic Progress" rating.

Many of the non-white students enrolled at Hendry Park are ENL students whose native languages include Spanish and Arabic. The challenges associated with an ENL, special education, and free and reduced enrollment has impacted Hendry Park. We embrace all of our students and work diligently to meet their needs. Our school community is enhanced not only by the diverse student population, dedicated faculty and support staff but also by our Parent Teacher Organization and partnerships with local organizations such as Trine University, Steuben County Literacy Coalition, Junior Achievement, the Dekko Foundation, Psi Iota Xi, the City of Angola Police Department, and numerous parent and community volunteers. In 2010-2011 we are planning a “Lunch Buddy” partnership with the Angola High School football team. Players from the team will be partnered with at risk students in an effort to provide each of them with a supportive “buddy.” Students and AHS football players will eat lunch and participate in recess activities together once a week.

Modern Facilities
In the most recent remodeling project, Hendry Park acquired a new computer lab, outfitted with 30 networked computers, and a beautiful media center/library. Every classroom in the school has a Promethean interactive white board, a television, VCR, DVD player, and two student computers. We have a community/multi-purpose room near the commons area, which is used on a daily basis for large group instruction, guest speakers, faculty and staff meetings, Girl Scout meetings, and professional development in-services.

Our City

The city of Angola is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Indiana. It is situated just south of the 80/90 toll road in rolling hills, and is approximately 10 miles from both the Michigan and Ohio state lines. Angola is one of several small cities in Steuben County, a county noted for its 101 lakes. The presence of these lakes and Angola’s proximity to both the toll road and Interstate 69 has established Angola as a resort area for vacationers. Pokagon State Park, just north and west of Angola, is a resource, which provides our county community and its visitors with a natural setting for recreation and relaxation throughout the year.

People often describe Angola, Indiana as a “good place to raise children.” The staff of Hendry Park Elementary School takes pride in our city, and we strive to nurture our students and enhance our community by providing our students with the best education possible.

Encompassing 126 square miles, The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County serves the educational needs of Pleasant, Scott, Steuben, and York townships. Located in Steuben County, Indiana, we have a diversified economic base. Currently, the district consists of one high school, one middle school, and four elementary schools utilizing a K-5, 6-8, 9-12 grade level configuration.   Average Daily Membership for the 2009-2010 school year was 3,037 students. Our average attendance rate is 96.2%. The 2009 Report Card shows a low socio-economic population of 46% and a 3.4% language minority population speaking 8 distinctive languages. We serve a special needs population of 14.3% with “individual educational plans” and a high ability population of 10%. The 2009-2010 pupil enrollment summary indicates a student population of 1% Native American, .4% Black, 1% Asian, 4% Hispanic, 89.6% White, and 4% Multiracial.
